About The Author

Louise Nayer is a native New Yorker who moved to the Bay Area in 1976. Her most recent book is Poised for Retirement: Moving from Anxiety to Zen, with an interview in Forbes Magazine. Her previous book, Burned: A Memoir(2010 and republished 2016) was an Oprah Great Read and won the Wisconsin Library Association Award.

She has also written two books of poetry, one with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts and co-authored How to Bury a Goldfish: 113 Rituals forEveryday Life with Virginia Lang.

She retired from teaching for 27 years at City College of San Francisco and now teaches at OLLI UC Berkeley and at the Writer’s Grotto where she has been a member for seven years. She also works with students on developing their memoirs. She has written articles for OZY, the San Francisco Chronicle, Wear Your Voice and the Arizona Daily.  She is working on her fifth book now.


 She has two grown daughters and a step-daughter and lives with her husband and dog, Ella, in Glen Park.
